Background of the Study

End-of-life care is a critical aspect of oncology nursing, as it addresses the needs of patients who are in the terminal stages of cancer. Oncology nurses play a central role in providing comfort, managing symptoms, and supporting families. However, nurses’ attitudes towards end-of-life care can significantly influence the quality of care provided. This study will assess oncology nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State, to identify potential areas of improvement in the delivery of palliative and terminal care.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of end-of-life care in oncology, nurses' attitudes towards this aspect of care may vary widely. Negative attitudes or discomfort with death and dying may affect the delivery of compassionate care. This study aims to explore the attitudes of oncology nurses towards end-of-life care, which can inform training and policy improvements.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess oncology nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri.
  2. To explore how these attitudes affect the quality of care provided to terminal cancer patients.
  3. To identify factors that influence oncology nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care.

Research Questions

  1. What are the attitudes of oncology nurses towards end-of-life care at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri?
  2. How do these attitudes influence the quality of care provided to terminal cancer patients?
  3. What factors contribute to oncology nurses’ attitudes towards end-of-life care?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Oncology nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care significantly affect the quality of care provided to terminal cancer patients.
  2. Nurses’ personal experiences, training, and emotional readiness are key factors influencing their attitudes towards end-of-life care.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on oncology nurses working at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. Limitations include potential biases in self-reported attitudes and the challenge of measuring subjective aspects of care delivery.
